It’s summer and you’re sweating everywhere. You’re decidedly too big for a kiddie pool, the beach is too crowded and none of your friends own a slip-n’-slide any more. Someone you know keeps a hot tub in their backyard, but the thought of 90 degree water grosses you out. You know what else grosses you out? Peeing in the pool. A thought strikes you all at once: WATERPARK. Sure, some kids might relieve themselves on the rides but you don’t care! That’s what chlorine’s for.
There are over 1,200 waterparks in North America alone. Here are the nine most fun in the entire world (in no particular order).
1. Aquaventure Waterpark, Dubai
(Source: Atlantis The Palm)
According to CNN, it’s got the world’s widest water slide, the Middle East’s longest river ride (1.6 kilometres!) and the Middle East’s longest zip line. But if lazy rivers and adrenaline aren’t for you, you can feed stingrays, snorkel in “the largest open air Marine exhibit in the Middle East” or kiss a sea lion. This waterpark is actually an attraction of the hotel Atlantis: The Palm, Dubai, so you can roll out of bed and onto a water slide. Take a virtual tour here!
2. Schlitterbabhn Waterpark, Kansas City

The mile long lazy river and the 42-foot-tall raft ride are actually some of the least exciting attractions at Schlitterbahn. In fact, everything’s overshadowed by Verrückt: the cold sweat, panic-inducing, tallest water slide in the world. General admission’s $56.99 but season passes are $129.99, so if you live in Kansas City… not a dull way to spend the summer.
3. Avalanche Bay, Michigan
(Source: Avalanchebay)
Paradoxically themed as a “Swiss-Austrian snowy village,” this indoor waterpark brings a unique twist to its 88,000 square feet, 84 degree interior. Right on theme, the “splasherhorn” will drench you in 800 gallons of water as the sound of a horn triggers an “avalanche.” Really, the name “splasherhorn” alone is reason enough to visit Avalanche Bay. Slides, fake icebergs and hot spring themed hot tubs round out the winter theme. Open June through December!
4. Tropical Islands, Germany

Converted from a massive air force hangar, Tropical Islands is so epic, they don’t call it a waterpark. Instead, it’s “Europe’s largest tropical holiday world.” Accordingly, they offerGermany’s tallest water slide (27 metres), a simulated indoor beach where you can drink beer and the “world’s largest indoor rainforest.” Are there other indoor rainforests in the world? Doesn’t matter, this one has 50,000 plants and, presumably, zero hungry jaguars. If you’re with the kids, drop them off at the bumper cars, bumper boats or mini golf. There’s even a special New Year’s Eve celebration.
5. The Watercube Waterpark, Beijing
After the Olympics, the giant sporting arenas built for the games often lose their utility. Not so with China’s National Aquatic Center where Michael Phelps won eight gold medals. Aesthetically pleasing with giant (fake) jellyfish floating from the ceiling, the Water Cube’s complete with huge slides, a lazy river and a fairly nauseating slide aptly called ‘Tornado.’ Try the ‘Happy Magic Theme Sandwich,’ but only after you’ve experienced the “centrifugal real feeling” that accompanies the “Bulletbowl.”
6. Aquatica, Orlando
Seaworld’s very own waterpark, it’s full of rides and pools, but the aquatic, non-human life really sets it apart. Float down a lazy river surrounded by colorful, tropical fish or take the Dolphin Plunge: an enclosed, underwater slide that takes you sightseeing through an aquairum full of Commerson’s Dolpins. With three different cafeterias and cabanas for rent, you’re welcome to relax between splashes.
7. World Waterpark, Edmonton, Canada

The world’s largest indoor waterpark boasts the world’s largest indoor wave pool and 17 slides in four categories: beginner, intermediate, advanced and extreme. So there’s something for everyone even if you’re not interested in the “Sky Screamer Extreme” and its promise of a “plummet down a vertical free fall when the trap door opens.” The World Waterpark is actually housed inside the West Edmonton Mall, which itself includes an ice rink, amusement park and the ”Marine Life – Sea Caverns” complete with fish, sharks, turtles and penguins. Of course, the mall also offers plenty of shopping and hotels.
8. Beach Park, Aquiraz, Brazil

At 134 feet, the former tallest water slide in the world (now surpassed by the 168 foot Verrückt, see #2), throws you speeding down a four to five second drop at almost 30 miles per hour. Another of Beach Park’s “extreme” rides sends you down a nearly 90 degree angle on a double inner tube. Also sporting “moderate” and “family” attractions, you might prefer its other awesome slides, the largest wave pool in Latin America or even the sauna. If you get tired of the man-made fun, you can walk to the adjacent sandy beach and its excellent seafood restaurant. Look into lodging at one of several Beach Park resorts.
9. Wilderness Resort, Wisconsin Dells

America’s largest waterpark resort is actually comprised of eight distinct waterparks: four indoor and four outdoor. Needless to say, they have it all here — slides, pools, lazy rivers, lazy lakes, America’s largest indoor wave pool, tube slides and body slides. You name it, they’ve got a wet version of it. In addition to hotels and condos, there’s also the wilderness cabin option. Don’t worry if you don’t like to rough it, some of the cabins actually come with home theaters (and all lodging includes waterpark access).
