RANKED: The 10 Most Ridiculous Looking Sci-Fi Characters

Sometimes science fiction seems realistic and sometimes it does not. But a great science fiction character should stimulate your imagination and sense of wonder, not make you laugh out loud. As Rod Sterling famously quipped, ”Fantasy is the impossible made possible. Science Fiction is the improbable made possible.” The following characters cross that line, I think, into the impossibly crazy looking.

    10. Chewbacca from ‘Star Wars Episode III, IV, V, VI’ (1977)

A seven foot, harry, totally unkempt beast based on George Lucas’s dog, even Princess Leia calls him a “walking carpet.’

    9. Rygel from ‘Farscape’ (2001)

The 26 inch tall frog-face with his nose between his eyes and a few unkempt whiskers once asks, “Should I disrobe so it’s memorable?” No, Rygel. Please, no.

    8. The Na’vi in ‘Avatar’ (2009)

As Will Heaven of The Telegraph puts it, “Blue skin aside, they’re essentially a childish pastiche of the ‘ethnic…’ [t]hey wear Maasai-style necklaces and beaded jewelry which Cameron has borrowed from tribal East Africa. Their long, dark hair is dreadlocked. Their clothes are apparently Amerindian.” It’s all too obvious what Cameron wants the Na’vi to represent.

    7. Yoda from ‘Star Wars Episode I, II, III, V, VI’ (1980)

We know he’s a master jedi, but he’s also a 900 year old two-foot tall elf-man with gray hair and claws.

    6. The Crites from ‘Critters’ (1986)

They’re an alien mix between “rats, possums, Tasmanian devils, badgers, and porcupines” with red eyes. And don’t forget the razor sharp teeth on these “man eating dust mops.”

    5. The Max Rebo Band from ‘Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi’

Between the tall one with a trunk nose, the short one with a trunk nose, and the one without a nose at all, the only weirder looking creature is their benefactor Jabba the Hut.

    4. Mothra from ‘Mothra’ (1961)

The giant moth that somehow looks faker than the giant lizard! But really, a giant moth? Does it get more ridiculous?

    3. E.T. from ‘E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial’ (1982)

E.T.’s lumpy pectorals and oddly glowing finger may have something to do with why the authorities wont leave this endearing alien alone.

    2. Zed from ‘Zardoz’ (1974)

We like Sean Connery better as James Bond, wearing a suit.

    1. Jar Jar Binks, ‘Star Wars Episode I, II, and III’ (1999)

According to IMDB, George Lucas’s son came up with the name “Jar Jar.” But Lucas has no one to blame but himself for the floppy eared, camel-faced, most-hated Star Wars character that is Jar Jar Binks.
